Women's Basketball Faces UC Santa Cruz in First Exhibition Action

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's basketball gets the 2017-18 season going Wednesday at 7 p.m. against UC Santa Cruz in the first exhibition of the year.

The Broncos begin year two under head coach Bill Carr after finishing last season 14-16 and 9-9 and in West Coast Conference play. Santa Clara lost five games that came down to the last possession a year ago.

SERIES HISTORY
Santa Clara is 3-0 all-time with UC Santa Cruz with the first meeting coming during the 1965-66 season. Last year the Broncos took down the Banana Slugs 85-39 in Leavey.

THE BRONCOS
Last season Santa Clara scored 62.0 points per game while shooting 38.7 percent from the field and 30.4 percent from beyond the arc. The Broncos grabbed 36.9 rebounds per game and had a plus-1.2 rebound differential while forcing 17.7 turnovers per game.

Santa Clara returns its top scorer from a year ago in Emily Wolph and its top rebounder in Morgan McGwire. Wolph led the WCC with 75 3-pointers made and scored 12.8 ppg while adding 3.7 assists per game. McGwire grabbed 7.7 rpg and scored 10.3 ppg as well. She shot 45.4 percent from the field.

Also returning is Taylor Berry who was one of two Broncos to start all 30 games last year. She scored 7.6 ppg and added 4.6 rpg whiling finishing second on the team with 43 steals. Kyla Martin also saw action in every game in 2016-17 as a key reserve.

THE BANANA SLUGS
UC Santa Cruz went 14-11 last year while outscoring opponents 64.6-62.2. The Banana Slugs shot 35.2 percent from the field and 28.8 percent from beyond the arc. They were outrebounded on the season by an average of 41.9-41.6.

Katie Young is the team's top returning scorer after averaging 9.4 ppg last season. She was second on the team with 32 3-pointers made and added 3.0 apg and 2.3 rpg. Jenna Sparks finished last season second on the roster with 6.1 rpg while scoring 7.3 ppg and led the team with 15 blocks.

Parking: For weekday games, the Leavey Center lot, located on Accolti Way off El Camino Real, is free beginning one hour prior to tipoff. Any other parking facility on campus will be subject to normal daily rates or restrictions, including the main structure, located on Palm Drive.
