Women's Basketball Drops Road Trip Finale at BYU

PROVO, UtahMorgan McGwire scored a season-high 23 points but Brenna Chase and Cassie Devashrayee combined for 44 as BYU topped Santa Clara women's basketball 65-47 Saturday afternoon.

After beginning the game 0-for-7 from downtown, the Cougars (10-7, 5-1 WCC) started to find their touch and connected on nine of their final 14 attempts from deep, including four in the second quarter when they took the lead for good.

Despite the hot shooting from beyond the arc, the Broncos (5-12, 1-5 WCC) hung around and got within 38-34 after four-straight points from McGwire with four minutes left in the third. BYU answered with a 12-2 run to close the period that made it a 50-36 lead. Chase scored 10 in a row for the Cougars during the run, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Chase set career-highs with 23 points and five 3-pointers made while adding seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Devashrayee scored 21 with eight boards and four assists.

Both offenses came to life in the second quarter with a combined 37 points. McGwire scored seven in the period with Berry adding five and Toleafoa scoring four but BYU was 8-for-15 from the floor to take a three-point lead into halftime.

McGwire finished 9-for-19 from the floor and added eight rebounds. Toleafoa scored 10 while Berry scored nine with eight rebounds.

Santa Clara came out of the gate strong and never trailed in the first quarter. The Bronco defense held BYU to just eight points on 3-for-11 shooting in the period. Santa Clara also forced five turnovers during the opening 10 minutes.

  • Santa Clara is now 2-15 all-time against BYU.
  • Taylor Berry made her 91st consecutive start.
  • Morgan McGwire moved into a tie for second all-time at Santa Clara with 113 blocks. She is tied with Lindsey Leo (2010-13) and trails only Annie Garrison (1997-2001) with 207.
  • Santa Clara forced 17 turnovers and had 10 steals.
  • The 10 starters in the game combined for all but five points.
