Women's Golf Finishes Sixth at Duck Invitational

EUGENE, Ore. - The Santa Clara University women's golf team finished sixth at the Oregon Duck Invitational following a final round 324 Tuesday afternoon at the Eugene Country Club.

Kim Welch won individual medalist honors for the third consecutive year to lead Washington State to its second straight Oregon Duck Invitational title Tuesday at the par-72, 5,968-yard course.

Welch and teammate Maria Kostina both shot final rounds of 1-under 71 to lift the Cougars to a one stroke victory over host Oregon. WSU finished the event at 913, while the Ducks came in at 914. Portland State was third at 945 and Cal State Northridge and Long Beach State tied for fourth at 959.

Welch, a junior from Sacramento, defeated Oregon's Therese Wenslow and Northridge's Elizabeth Allen by five shots. Welch, who won the Oregon Duck Invitational in 2001 at Mallard Creek and last year at Shadow Hills, finished 2-over 218 for the tournament.

Wenslow fired a 2-over 74 Tuesday and her second-place tie marked a career-best finish for the sophomore from Bunkeflostrand, Sweden. She and Allen came in at 7-over 223.

Meggie Fagundes was the top finisher for the Broncos as she concluded the tournament in a tie for 13th place with her tournament total of 236. Samantha Trask carded a 1-over par, 73, on Tuesday to push her two-day total to 237, giving her 16th place by herself.

Candice Palmer finished in a tie for 35th while Courtney Dimpel-Composti finished in a tie for 37th with their three-round totals of 252 and 253, respectively. Paige Wilson rounded out the scoring for SCU, shooting a final round 88 for a tournament total of 275, finishing her alone in 50th place.

The Broncos rBroncos will return to action on March 22-23 when they host the SCU Colby Invitational. That tournament will be contested at the Rancho Caņada Golf Club in Carmel, Calif.
