Dimpel-Composti Wins Santa Cruz City Amateur

Dimpel-Composti Wins Santa Cruz City Amateur

Aug. 11, 2003

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Santa Clara University women's golfer Courtney Dimpel-Composti rallied from a three shot deficit on the final day to capture the Santa Cruz City Amateur Championship on Sunday at the DeLaveaga Golf Course in Santa Cruz, Calif.

The soon to be junior at Santa Clara entered Sunday's round in the final pairing but trailed the leader by three shots. The lead would soon vanish for the leader as she and Dimpel-Composti traded the lead several times throughout the day. The back-and-forth action between the competitors made each shot even more critical as the round progressed.

No shots were more crucial than on the 18th green as both players had length putts for par. Dimpel-Composti calmly made her 12-foot par saver while her competitor just missed, giving the two-year veteran at SCU the hard-fought victory.

"Courtney finally achieved one of her highest held goals of winning the Santa Cruz City Amateur," said Santa Clara head coach Polly Schulze. "As her coach I am very proud of what she did this weekend and hope that this win will give her the confidence she needs coming in to our Fall season next month."

During her first two years on the Mission Campus, Dimpel-Composti has made tremendous strides in her golf game. As a freshman she posted the third best stroke average on the team with her 87.3 mark. That average went down by over five strokes as a sophomore, posting a team best 82.1 stroke average during the 2002-2003 season that included four top-25 performances.

Dimpel-Composti and her teammates report to campus in late September when classes start. They begin their season on September 28 at the Lady Vandal Invitational in Moscow Idaho. The 54-hole event will be contested over two days.
