SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's golf team carded a program-record final round en route to winning the Matador Spring Invitational at Simi Hills Golf Club in Simi Valley. The Broncos won by one stroke over host Cal State Northridge.
Santa Clara recorded a team round 299, marking the first time in program history the squad has broken the 300 barrier. Entering the season, Santa Clara's best round had been a 312, a mark the squad has broken about 11 times this season. Today's win also marks the second of the season, following a victory in the fall at the Sacramento State Invitational.
Adding to today's emotion was the fact the Broncos did it without their coach, Polly Schulze, who was unable to accompany the team to the course after spending three hours in the emergency room at a local hospital last night.
"The fact the team broke this goal on this day is a true testament to their character and ability," Schulze said after the win. "I had no doubt we could do it this season, but to do it under these circumstances showed so much courage. I'm so proud of them I can't even put it into words."
Samantha Trask led the Broncos on this historic day, carding a 71. Candice Palmer was just one stroke behind her teammate and was followed by Courtney Dimpel-Composti's 77 and Paige Wilson's 79.
Trask and Palmer tied for third overall, while Dimpel-Composti placed 10th. Meggie Fagundes placed 14th and Wilson 23rd.
Santa Clara finished with a two-day total 610, just ahead of the host Matadors. Sacramento State was third at 629 and Cal Poly fourth at 643. The individual tournament title was won by UCLA's Hana Kim, with a one-over 142.
The Broncos will close out the spring season at the annual West Coast Conference Championships, to be held April 12-13 in Madera.
"Northridge has had our number for a long time," Schulze added. "To beat a team ranked 20 spots higher than our program gives us great confidence heading into the conference championships."
