SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University softball team is scheduled to play its home opener against rival San Jose State on Wednesday at Marsalli Park. The first pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1:00 p.m. The Broncos are 5-6 on the season, the Spartans 1-3.
The Broncos returned Monday from Oahu, Hawaii where they finish 3-3 at the Chevron Paradise Classic.
The rivalry between Santa Clara and San Jose State was launched for the 2002-2003 season. The purpose is to bring attention to college sports in the South Bay, to provide a sense of pride between alumni in the Bay Area, to increase attendance at sporting events between the two schools and to build school spirit among the student body.
Currently, the Broncos lead the Spartans in points 18-3. The winner of the game will receive two points.
