SUNNYVALE, Calif. - The Santa Clara University softball team fell 1-0 to Arizona State at the National Invitation Softball Tournament, hosted by San Jose State University at the Twin Creeks Sports Complex in Sunnyvale. Today's game closed out play at the weekend-long tournament. Santa Clara is now 12-12 on the season.
The Sun Devils' shortstop, Kara Brun, scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run.
Brun led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a count of 1-2 against Bronco's starter Jaime Forman-Lau, but her next pitch was right down the middle, as Brun crushed it over the left centerfield fence for the game winner. Desiree Serrano limited the Broncos to only three hits with seven strikeouts for her fifth shutout on the year.
Forman-Lau struck out seven for the Broncos despite the loss. She was also the Broncos' representative on the All-Tournament Team.
"We had plenty of opportunities and our defense kept us in the game, but we couldn't get that clutch hit," SCU head coach Marcy Crouch said.
The Broncos return to action on Thursday, hosting Southern Utah. First pitch of the double header will be at Marsalli Park at 4 p.m.
