SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Junior pitcher Jaime Forman-Lau threw the first perfect game in Santa Clara University softball history, as she led the Broncos to a 6-0 victory over San Diego. The Broncos won the second game 3-0 in Pacific Coast Softball Conference doubleheader at Marsalli Park. Santa Clara's record improves to 24-19, 6-2 in league play, while the Toreros fall to 6-34, 1-11.
Forman-Lau struck out 14 Toreros in the historic outing. Her record improves to 15-10.
"Jaime has been outstanding for us all season and for her to complete not only a no-hitter today, but a perfect game is a huge accomplishment." SCU head coach Marcy Crouch said. "The focus that goes into 21 straight outs can be credited to the hard work she has put in all season, and the hard work of catcher Roni Rivera and our defense. A perfect game truly is a team accomplishment and I'm glad that we get to finish our weekend on such a high note."
Santa scored all six runs in the first game behind the long ball.
Sophomore Kelley Johnson put the Broncos on the board with a three-run blast over the left-center fence. She drove in Rivera, who reached base on an error by the Toreros second baseman, and freshman Jenny Brown, who registered a ground rule double.
The Broncos extended their lead to five in the top of the fourth with junior Rachel Sherman's third homerun of the season, driving in freshman Shannon Linerud who singled to center.
Santa Clara's final run of the game came in the fifth inning with Brown's solo homer over the left field fence. Brown breaks into the record books as she ties for fourth with past Broncos Kim Maynard and Michelle Singer for most homeruns in a single season with three.
Erin Harmonson allowed six hits and takes the loss for the Toreros, as her record moves to 3-13.
In the second game, Santa Clara posted their three runs in the top of the fifth. With one out in the inning, Johnson singled to center and quickly stole second. Sophomore Keri Reisinger moved Johnson to third with a single to the pitcher. Brown then drove in both runners with a double to left-center. Brown was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from junior Vanessa Werner and driven in on a single to center by freshman Jessica Clee.
The Toreros created opportunity to score in the bottom of the third with bases loaded, but were unable to put a run across home plate as the Bronco defense shut them down.
Freshman hurler Liz Courter took the win for the Broncos allowing only four Toreros hits. Her record improves to 9-6. Gina McFarland takes the loss for San Diego and her record moves to 3-12.
Santa Clara will break from conference action with a doubleheader against Bay Area neighbor and 13th-ranked Stanford on Tuesday. First pitch at the Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium is at 5 p.m.
