The No. 73 Santa Clara women's tennis team flew to Texas looking for sunny skies. Instead the team was greeted by temperatures in the 20s and snow. Both the Broncos matches were forced inside. The Broncos fell 5-0 to No. 42 Texas Tech on Saturday, but they rebounded nicely to top No. 74 Florida International on Sunday 4-2.
Santa Clara hosts UC Davis on Sat., Feb. 18 at Noon and then No. 67 UC Santa Barbara on Mon, Feb. 20 at 11 am. FYI, new rankings come out Tues., Feb. 14.
"We had a great win vs. Florida International under some tough conditions," said Bronco head coach Ben Cabell. "I am very proud of how we handled a very difficult situation. The team didn't let anything get to them and they played tough and had a good win on Sunday."
The matches were scheduled to be played outside on six courts, but were forced inside both days due to snow on four indoor courts.
On Saturday the Broncos fell 5-0 to No. 42 Texas Tech. Jessica Agra and No. 37 Katie Le played No. 45 Kenna Kilgo and Samantha Adams tough on their home courts, but the Red Raider duo got away with a 9-7 doubles win.
On Sunday the Broncos defeated No. 74 Florida International 4-2. The Broncos top three singles players won, including Le, who defeated Sarah McLean 6-2, 7-6 (5). Alexandra Zaniewski defeated Rita Masiak 6-2, 7-6 (6) at No. 2 and Kelly Lamble defeated Lisa Johnson 6-2, 2-6 and 6-4 at No. 3.
The No. 1 doubles team of Le and Jessica Agra defeated FIU's No. 1 team of Rita Masiak and McLean 8-3. The Broncos also won at No. 2 with Lamble and Maggie McGeorge taking an 8-5 victory over Johnson and Guttormsen.
