WCC Championship Brackets and All-Academic Teams Announced for Women's Tennis

Santa Clara, Calif.—As the Santa Clara women's tennis team closes out the regular season with two strong wins against Gonzaga and Portland, the West Coast Conference announced the brackets and match times on Monday for the WCC Championships presented by the Andre Agassi Foundation for Education. The Bronco women have secured the No. 5 seed and will play No. 8 seed Gonzaga in the first round on Wed., April 25 at 12:30 p.m.

If the No. 5 Broncos win on Wednesday, they will play the winner of the No. 4 LMU and No. 9 Portland match in the second round on Thur., April 26 at 12:30 p.m.

The tournament will take place in San Diego, Calif. at the Barnes Tennis Center with three women's matches starting at 12:30 a.m. on Wed., Apr. 25. The Championship is set for 12:30 p.m. on Sat., Apr. 28. The winner of the tournament receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

"Going 2-0 this weekend against two WCC competitors was very important for our team," said junior Kelly Lamble after the Portland 6-1 win. "This gives us a lot of momentum to carry throughout the WCC tournament and a boost in confidence to get a little revenge against some WCC teams we lost to in the regular season."

Along with the release of the brackets and match times, the WCC also announced the 2012 Women's Tennis All-Academic Team with four Broncos receiving recognition for their academic excellence. Sophomore No. 48 Katie Le and junior Kelly Lamble were both awarded top honors, and junior Maggie McGeorge and senior Kacie Wagner received Honorable Mentions for Santa Clara.

Le is a Computer Engineering major with a 3.81 GPA and Lamble majors in Finance and holds a 3.85 GPA. Both women have been key players for the Broncos success, performing at the No. 1, 2, and 3 single positions and No. 1 and 2 doubles position throughout the entire season. McGeorge holds a 3.368 GPA as a Marketing major and Wagner has a 3.666 GPA as a Political Science major.

To be nominated by the WCC, student-athletes must hold at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (GPA), be a sophomore, junior, or senior, and be a significant contributor to her team on the court for the 2012 dual season.

The Santa Clara women's tennis team as a whole lead the Santa Clara Athletic Department with the highest GPA at 3.505 for the 2012 Winter quarter. Read more about all our teams academic success here.
