Santa Clara, Calif.—Finishing off the home slate in 2012 means Bronco women's tennis fans will have to say goodbye to super senior Kacie Wagner. The Santa Clara women's tennis team returns to the Degheri Tennis Center this weekend to take on WCC opponents Gonzaga on Saturday, April 21 at 11:00 a.m. and Portland on Sunday, April 22 at 11:00 a.m
Senior Day is versus Portland on Sunday. The Broncos (9-10; 2-4 WCC) look to finish strong in league play in preparation for the WCC Championships on April 26.
"This weekend is important for deciding our seeding for the WCC Championships next weekend. We want to go 2-0 against the final two WCC opponents to help set up momentum for the Championships," said Bronco head coach Ben Cabell.
Last weekend, Santa Clara traveled to San Diego where the match was stopped midway through on Friday and delayed until the next day. The Broncos fell 4-0 against the Toreros. Santa Clara then traveled back up to the Bay to take on cross-town rival No. 39 Saint Mary's. The Gaels edged out Santa Clara by a score of 6-1.
"The month of March was tough for the team because of the unlucky combination of injuries and our difficult schedule. We look to finish strong this weekend to give us a good chance at the No. 4 or 5 seed for the WCC Championships," said Cabell.
Senior Day
With the final two home matches of the 2011-12 season, the Broncos will be honoring Kacie Wagner in celebration of Senior Day on Sunday, April 21 before the Portland match begins. From Gilbert, Ariz., Wagner has served as team captain for the Santa Clara women's tennis team for three consecutive years.
Gonzaga
The Bulldogs are 9-9 overall this season and 1-5 against WCC opponents. Gonzaga recently lost to the University of Nevada by a score of 2-5 last weekend. They will also play San Francisco during their trip to the Bay Area.
Portland
Portland (5-14, 0-6 WCC) wraps up the 2012 regular season with a pair of road matches, kick-starting the road trip with an 11:00 a.m. match on Saturday at San Francisco before taking on Santa Clara on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. Freshman Anastasia Polyakova leads the Pilots with a 10-8 record, followed closely by juniors Valeska Hoath (10-9) and Sabine Fuchs (9-10).
Academic Achievements
Women's tennis posted the highest GPA at 3.505 for the Winter 2012 quarter out of all the Santa Clara women's sports. They posted the second-highest GPA on the women's side at 3.36 in the Fall 2011 quarter. Four of the women posted 3.8 or better grade point averages, including Brittany Warly who posted a perfect 4.0! Read more about the academic achievements of the Santa Clara student-athletes here.
No. 48 Katie Le
Le is currently ranked No. 48 by the ITA (April 17). The WCC Player of the Month in March, Le is the highest ranked singles player in the WCC. She is also the second-highest ranked mid-major singles player in the country.
