Santa Clara University's student-athletes recorded a 3.107 grade point average (GPA) for the Winter 2012 quarter, topping 3.0 or better for the 15th time in 16 quarters. In addition 105 student-athletes achieved a 3.5 GPA or higher this quarter - 35 more than last quarter - and 81 Bronco student-athletes have a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA. Santa Clara's cumulative GPA for its student-athletes is 3.048.

"It is terrific to see the student-athletes post a GPA for the quarter above 3.1. It is the second time in three quarters it has been above 3.1, including 3.14 in the Spring of 2011 .  With all the additional demands on their time with their sports, that is certainly an impressive accomplishment.  I applaud the efforts of Zoe Kranzler and Jason Stock, our academic services officers, and of course our coaches for creating a culture of academic success - one in which the student-athletes really thrive," said Santa Clara Athletic Director Dan Coonan.

The men's cross country team led all Bronco teams with a 3.526 GPA during the Winter 2012 quarter.  It is the fourth straight quarter they have led the men's side.  They also have the top cumulative GPA at 3.44 as well.

"I am once again very proud of our student-athlete's efforts in the classroom. Academic success is a requirement for our student-athletes and we make it a priority every quarter. Their dedication to balancing academics and athletics is one of the reasons I enjoy working with our student-athletes so much," said Bronco head cross country and track coach Felipe Montoro.

On the women's side, the tennis team posted the highest GPA at 3.505 for the Winter 2012 quarter.  They posted the second-highest GPA on the women's side at 3.36 in the Fall 2011 quarter.  Women's cross country has the highest cumulative GPA at 3.33.

"I am really proud of the team. We have always stressed the great balance of academics and athletics with our program.  For them to achieve this when we are in season is even more impressive," said Bronco head women's tennis coach Ben Cabell.  "Four of the women posted 3.8 or better grade point averages, including Brittany Warly who posted a perfect 4.0!"

Individually, Santa Clara had 12 student-athletes achieve a perfect 4.0 GPA for the Winter 2012 quarter and 40 student-athletes posted a 3.8 GPA or higher - 13 more than last quarter.

Fourteen Bronco programs posted a 3.0 GPA or higher for the Winter 2012 quarter, with six teams posting a 3.2 GPA or higher for the Winter 2012 quarter. In addition, 12 teams have a 3.0 GPA or better for their cumulative GPA - with all but two women's sports posting a cumulative gpa of 3.0 or better.

The 14 teams who posted a 3.0 or better GPA for the Winter 2012 quarter include: men's golf, men's soccer, men's water polo, women's soccer, men's tennis, men's rowing, women's water polo, women's rowing, volleyball, women's cross country, women's track, men's track, women's tennis and men's cross country.
