Clarke reaches final 16 at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships

Draws/Results: USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Madison Clarke continued her strong fall season by reaching the round of 16 in singles at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships.

On Saturday morning, the freshman defeated Stephane Lin of Cal 6-3, 7-5 in the round of 32 before being ousted in the afternoon by nationally-ranked Maiar Sherif Ahmed of Fresno State 6-1, 6-2. Ahmed entered the five-day tournament, which is being held at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium, ranked No. 104 in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

"It was a great tournament for Madison. It was impressive to see a freshman lead the way," said head coach Ben Cabell. "It's difficult for an unseeded player to come move the draw, but Madison showed she can play with the top players regionally and nationally."

Cooke, who won a pair of singles matches during the opening day of the tournament Friday, teamed with Daniella Silva in doubles, but that duo was knocked out in Saturday's round of 32 as Donika Bashota and Lize Leenknecht of Washington State prevailed 8-7(3).

Silva did advance in the consolation singles bracket, downing Audrey Mayer of Cal in straight sets (6-2, 6-1) in the first round.

The field features 128 singles players and 64 doubles entries from California, Cal Poly, Eastern Washington, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Oregon, Pacific, Portland, Portland State, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, San Jose State, Seattle, UC Davis, Washington and Washington State, as well as host Stanford.

Chelby Cooke, who also won a pair of singles matches Friday, was eliminated in Saturday's round of 32. Sophia Whittle of Gonzaga downed Cooke 6-4, 6-3.

Newcomer Elizabeth Stephens and junior Nabila Farah were eliminated Saturday in the consolation bracket. Stephens pushed her opening-round match to a tiebreak before falling 6-4, 6-7(4), 1-0(3) to Jiayu Mu of San Francisco. Farah lost 6-2, 6-1 to Barbora Michalkova of Washington State.

The Broncos close out their fall season at home Nov. 6-8 with the SCU Invitational.
