Feb. 2, 2002

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Junior Becky Hong scored five goals to lead the Santa Clara University women's water polo team, but it wasn't enough, as the Broncos fell 17-8 to No. 10 UC Davis this afternoon at the Leavey Pool.

With the loss, the Broncos fall to 2-2 on the season.

The Aggies opened the afternoon strong, taking a 5-1 lead after the first quarter, including one goal from Anne Harter, who led UCD with four goals.

Hong made it 6-2 in the second period with a seven-meter score from the left side. She scored again at the buzzer to make it 10-3 at intermission.

UCD's Tiffany Hodgens scored twice in the third period. Teammate Nicole Lorrimer scored off a redirection from Allison Johnstone to put the Aggies ahead 14-5 midway through the quarter. Scoring slowed down in the fourth quarter, before three goals were scored in the final 74 seconds.

Senior Bronco Sara Schmitt scored twice in the third period. The first came from four meters when she took it in to the far side of the net. The second went into the net after hitting the inside of the right post during a Bronco power play. Hong added one score each in the third and fourth quarters. Head coach Steven Hanson called a timeout with nine seconds remaining in the game to set up a play for Kelley Mays. The junior took advantage to round out the Bronco scoring.

The Broncos will visit Arizona State next Saturday, February 9. Two matches are scheduled, the first slated for 10 a.m. with the second following at 3 p.m. The contests will mark the program debut for the Sun Devil women's water polo program.
