Women's Water Polo Places Second at Claremont Tournament

March 3, 2002

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team advanced to the championship game of the Claremont Tournament with its first-ever victory over host Claremont, a 9-8 overtime victory. The Broncos weren't able to hold on in the finale, falling to Cal State Bakersfield 6-5 to close out weekend play.

The split moved the Broncos to 10-6 on the season and will next be in action at the UC Davis Shootout next weekend. The team returns home on Tuesday, March 12, to host Wagner at the Leavey Pool.

Elizabeth Glotzbach scored four goals to lead the Broncos in the historic victory over Claremont. Kelley Mays and Katy Shumm added two each while Becky Hong provided the finally tally. Anne Ginotti posted six blocks in the cage.

Santa Clara had lost a close match to CS Bakersfield just last week, and was looking forward to the rematch. But the Roadrunners held on for a one-point margin. Hong led the team with three scores while Glotzbach added two. Ginotti had a season-high 12 saves in goal.

"It was a fantastic game, very close down to the end," Santa Clara head coach Steve Hanson said. "We had plenty of opportunities but just couldn't get the upper hand. At the same time, I feel pretty confident with how we played and where we're at in our season."
