Women's Water Polo Scores Early and Often against Wagner

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team defeated Wagner College by a score of 15-3 Tuesday afternoon at the Leavey Pool. The Broncos improve to 13-9 on the season with their second largest margin of victory on the season.

Carly Carpenter set the tone midway through the first period when she scored with 5:34 remaining to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead. After Wagner tied it up at the 3:00 minute mark, Santa Clara roared back with three goals in a span of a minute and a half to post a 4-1 lead to end the first stanza.

The Broncos continued their domination, posting nine more unanswered goals during the next two periods to hold a commanding 13-1 lead at the end of the third period. Amanda Ginn led the way during the middle 20 minutes of the game, scoring all of her game-high five goals during that span.

In the final stanza, Wagner finally ended the Santa Clara streak of 26:41 without allowing a goal, as the Seahawks finally broke through with 6:06 remaining in the game, lowering the Bronco lead to 13-2. After two more SCU goals, Wagner concluded the scoring with a shot that found the back of the net with only 1:33 remaining in the game

Kelley Mays scored three goals on the day for the Broncos, while Elizabeth Glotzbach and Katy Shumm each added two. Carly Capenter, Kelley Rauenbeuhler and Allison Stover rounded out the scoring for Santa Clara with one goal apiece.

Anne Ginotti played very well for the Broncos between the pipes, making five of her six blocks in the game during the second and third periods when SCU raced out to its big lead.

Santa Clara will next take part in the Cal State San Bernardino Invitational this weekend in San Bernardino, Calif. The tournament is scheduled to take place all day on Saturday and Sunday, March 16 and 17 on the campus of CSUSB.
