Women's Water Polo Falls to LMU in WWWPA Semifinals

April 27, 2002

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team fell to top-seeded Loyola Marymount 15-1 this afternoon in a semifinal match of the Women's Western Water Polo Association Championships, hosted by UC Santa Cruz at the East Field House.

The Broncos, the tournament's fifth seed, fall to 21-14 on the season, and will face the loser of the other semifinal for a chance at a third-place finish. The contest will take place Sunday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. The Broncos will finish no lower than fourth this weekend, topping last season's fifth-place result. Santa Clara competed on the Division III level its first two varsity seasons.

"It wasn't for lack of trying," Bronco head coach Steve Hanson said. "We put up many shots, but LMU is just an excellent team. They are much stronger than we are across the board. However, I was hoping we would be able to show how fired up we were directly through the score."

Junior Bronco Becky Hong scored SCU's lone goal, in the fourth quarter. Santa Clara netminder Anne Ginotti recorded four blocks on 19 shots and added four steals.
