Women's Water Polo Wins Twice at Slugfest

Feb. 16, 2002

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team earned its first winning streak of the season with two victories at the Slugfest Tournament, hosted by UC Santa Cruz at the East Fieldhouse Pool.

The Broncos defeated UC Davis' B Club team 13-1 in the morning game an then followed with a 16-9 victory over Fresno State in the afternoon. SCU is now 5-3 on the season.

The Broncos jumped out to an 11-0 halftime lead against the Aggies to open tournament play. Junior Elizabeth Glotzbach led the team with four goals, while juniors Kelley Mays and Carly Carpenter added three each. Scoring was rounded out with one goal each from freshman Amanda Ginn, freshman Katy Shumm and junior Becky Hong. Sophomore Anne Ginotti recorded seven saves in goal.

"We basically dominated the game from start to finish with amazing defense," head coach Steve Hanson said. "They really couldn't break our pressure. We were able to back off in the second half and work on some of our set plays on offense."

In the second match, Santa Clara again built a large first-half lead, this time an 11-1 advantage over the Bulldogs. With an 8-0 first quarter margin, the Broncos again dominated with defense. Mays led the team with four goals, while Glotzbach added three. Two each were notched by freshman Allison Stover, senior Sara Schmitt, Carpenter and Hong. Shumm added the final tally.

"We got a little complacent in this game," Hanson added. "They beat us in the second half. We can't play sloppy like that the rest of the weekend."

The Broncos continue action at the Slugfest tomorrow, taking on club teams from Washington, ranked eighth, at 11:20 a.m. and Cal Poly, ranked sixth, at 2:50 p.m.
