Women's Water Polo Splits at Coyote Classic

March 17, 2002

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team fell to host CS San Bernardino 6-2 in the final game of the Coyote Classic this evening. Although a round-robin tournament, both the Broncos and the Coyotes entered the final game with a 3-0 record on the weekend, making the Classic finale a "championship" contest.

The Broncos opened the day with a 16-7 victory over Cal Tech. After a 9-7 first half, the Broncos turned up the defense and shut Cal Tech out of the net the rest of the game. Kelley Mays led the way with four goals, while Carly Carpenter and Elizabeth Glotzbach added three apiece. Kelly Rauenbuehler registered two scores, while Amanda Ginn, Becky Hong, Katy Shumm and Sara Schmitt posted one goal apiece. Anne Ginotti made six saves in the cage.

The split moved the Broncos to 16-10 on the season.

Against the Coyotes, Mays and Hong each scored one goal for the Broncos.

"We played very uninspired water polo," head coach Steve Hanson said of the second match. "The game was oriented toward defense, but we took almost 30 shots and couldn't get any to fall."
