TEMPE, Ariz. - Santa Clara University's women's water polo team won the first game of a double-header iover Arizona State in overtime, 8-6, in front of more than 125 fans at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe, Saturday morning. The Broncos would drop the afternoon match by a score of 9-2.

In the first match, Santa Clara used a balanced scoring attack to defeat the Sun Devils in their innagural women's water polo match in their school's history. Kelley Mays led the Bronco scoring attack, registering two goals including the game-winner with only :22 remaining the first overtime period. Six other Broncos each added one goal while Anne Ginotti recorded nine blocks on 18 ASU shots.

"Our balanced scoring attack was the highlight of the game for me," said head coach Steve Hanson. "When we play like we did in the first game, it is tough for teams to match up with us."

The Broncos fell behind 2-0 early in the first quarter, but rallied to take a 5-4 lead with just under a minute to play in regulation. After a Sun Devil shot went high with only :50 remaining in the game, the Broncos looked to have captured the game at 5-4, but the Sun Devils regained possession and got the ball back to Ashley Orzalli at the 2-meter mark. With just eight seconds left on the clock, Orzalli fired a backhand into the goal that tied it up at 5-5 and sent the game into overtime.

In the two three-minute overtime periods, Santa Clara outscored ASU 3-1 to spoil the Sun Devils' comeback.

The afternoon match was a completely different story as the Sun Devils raced out to an early 3-0 lead after the first period, but this time they extended their lead and held on for the 9-2 victory.

Katy Shumm and Becky Hong each scored one goal for the Broncos while Anne Ginotti recorded five blocks on 18 shots.

Former Bronco Kim Yost finished with a game-high three goals in game two, but the Sun Devils spread the wealth all afternoon, with five different players scoring goals. ASU also capitalized on 6-on-5 power play situations for five of its scores.

The Broncos' record remains even at 3-3 on the season following the split in Tempe. They will participate in the Slugfest Tournament hosted by UC Santa Cruz on February 16-17 in Santa Cruz, Calif.
