Three Broncos Place First; Women Defeat Saint Mary’s at SFSU Quad Meet

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Santa Clara cross country captured a trio of individual first-place finishes and the Bronco women's team defeated Saint Mary's at the San Francisco State Quad Meet Thursday in Hellman Hollow Meadow. Grayson Murphy and Bryan Crook finished first in their respective races as part of the team's second meet of the season, and Jeffrey Stalun also took first place running unattached in the men's open race.

In addition to Murphy's first-place finish, Mary Kriege took second place by finishing one second behind her teammate. Kriege ran 31 seconds faster than the Gaels' Carina Novell, who finished third overall. Camille Dyer and freshman Bevin McCullough also landed spots in the top 10.

"I thought we competed well today. Graysee and Mary controlled the race from the gun and were able to finish together," head coach Felipe Montoro said. "Camille Dyer really stood out today. She has had some bad luck with injury and illness over the years but was able to put in a big summer of work and it showed."

Crook won the meet by five seconds and Joey Berriatua took third place overall. Bronco newcomers Aaron Brumbaugh and John O'Hagan joined Will Burschinger in Santa Clara's top five.

"Bryan pulled away from some really good runners over the last few miles, he looked really strong throughout the race," Montoro said. "I am looking forward to seeing how he responds to the challenge of racing at the Griak Invitational next week.

"Joey Berriatua competed really well and is a much improved cross country runner. Will Burschinger had by far the best race in his career and that was fun to watch."
