Men's Water Polo Wins Twice at Inland Empire

Sept. 15, 2002

REDLANDS, Calif. - Junior J.P. Doucette scored in the third overtime as the Santa Clara University men's water polo team defeated Division III 10th-ranked Pomona-Pitzer 10-9 this afternoon to close out participation in the Inland Empire Invitational, hosted by the University of Redlands. The Broncos defeated No. 9 Chapman by an 8-5 score earlier in the day to improve to 4-5 on the season.

The Broncos earned a dramatic four-overtime victory last night against Whittier and didn't disappoint fans in the encore. Sophomore Mark Oda won the sprint and SCU set up its offense in a man-up situation, as Pomona had a man ejected at the end of the previous overtime. Doucette scored on a nice right-handed sweep shot that went through the goalie's outstretched arms.

"We played well the entire weekend," head coach Keith Wilbur said. "Our guys showed a lot of heart in these hard-fought victories."

Sophomore Nick Takahashi led all Bronco scorers with eight goals in the two contests, including five against Chapman. Oda, and freshmen Austin Brizgys and Marc Hausle, scored one tally apiece.

Against Pomona, Takahashi and freshman Whit Gilfillan added three goals each, while Oda chipped in two, followed by one from Jon Greco and Doucette's game-winner.

The Broncos remain on the road and visit Santa Cruz for three contests, taking on Redlands on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 2:30 p.m. Santa Clara will follow with two contests on Sunday, against La Verne at 11:15 a.m. and against host UC Santa Cruz at 2:15 p.m.
