Men's Water Polo Falls to UC Davis 12-5

Nov. 10, 2002

DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis Seniors Brian Combs and Brook Rogers, along with freshman Patrick Jacobson each recorded two goals as nine different Aggies scored in UC Davis' 12-5 victory over Santa Clara in a men's collegiate water polo match Sunday afternoon at Hickey Pool.

With the win the Aggies improve to 16-11 on the season, 2-0 at home, while Santa Clara falls to 10-24.

UC Davis got on the board early as midway through the first period Rogers scored a man-up goal for the 1-0 lead. Jacobson increased it to 2-0 40 seconds later with his first of the day. Each team would score two more goals in the period as UC Davis held a 4-2 lead after the opening seven minutes.

The Aggies took control in the second period as they outscored the Broncos 3-0. Rogers recorded the first and then Combs had the next two as UC Davis carried a 7-2 advantage into halftime. UC Davis continued the attack in the third as Jacobson scored his second of the contest on a one-on-one counterattack. Junior Jonathan Burke also added a goal for UC Davis in the period.

In the fourth period the Aggies received goals from senior Dave Smith along with freshmen Tom Jay and Scott Kerr. It marked Kerr's first goal of the season. Zach Wordes and Nick Sweetnam split time in net for the Aggies, each recording two saves.

"It was the kind of game we expected," said Aggie Head Coach Steve Doten. "The good thing was that we were able to play the entire bench and at one point had an all-freshmen lineup in the pool.

"Home games are always fun," Doten continued. "It gives the seniors a chance to play in front of their home crowd - I love our fans."

Santa Clara spread its scoring around as five different players each recorded a goal. Jon Greco, J.P. Doucette, Austin Brizgys, Mark Oda and Logan Gee all got on the board for the Broncos. Peter Moore recorded 12 saves in net for Santa Clara. The team played without Whit Gilfillan for most of the game, as he injured his hand in the first quarter.

"There's a rivalry between these two teams and it was an eye-opening experience," Santa Clara head coach Keith Wilbur said. "They guys saw the intensity and they're ready to go again next week. We know we can step it up a notch and give them a closer game."

The Broncos will return to Davis to play the Aggies on Saturday, November 16, at Noon.
