Men's Water Polo Falls to UC Davis, 15-5

Nov. 16, 2002

DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis seniors Brian Combs and Brook Rogers each recorded three goals to lead the Aggies to a 15-5 win over Santa Clara in men's collegiate water polo action at Hickey Pool Saturday afternoon. That tandem represents half of the four senior members of the UCD team who were playing in the final home games of their careers.

UC Davis improves to 17-11 with the win, while the Broncos fall to 10-25. The match-up is the second straight between these two teams, as the Aggies won 12-5 one week ago.

Conor Duignan and George Dingeldein each added two goals for UC Davis, while Jonathan Burke, Tom Jay, Dave Smith and Dan Patry each scored one.

For the Broncos, junior Logan Gee posted three goals while freshmen Jon Greco and Austin Brizgys added one apiece. The Aggies took advantage of SCU infractions to form a 4-2 lead in the first quarter. Rogers scored a man-up goal at 3:27 and Burke converted a penalty shot on Brizgys' four-meter violation to highlight the first period. UC Davis stretched out that lead with four unanswered goals in the second frame to build an 8-2 lead, but Gee trimmed it with his second goal in the final minute of the first half.

UC Davis responded with goals by Combs and Dingeldein the first 1:03 after the break to extend its lead to 10-3, then added two more 6-on-5 goals to bring the sore to 12-3 late in the third period. The Aggies drew another four-meter violation with 3:57 left in the third, but SCU goalkeeper Peter Moore knocked down Patry's penalty shot. Moore had nine saves in net, all in the final three quarters of play.

Santa Clara closes out its 2002 schedule against Division III fourth-ranked UC Davis on Sunday. The game will be played at the Leavey Pool and is slated to begin at noon.
