Men's Water Polo Falls to Cal Poly, 10-7

Oct. 19, 2002

SARATOGA, Calif. - Junior Logan Gee scored three goals, but it wasn't enough, as the Santa Clara University men's water polo team fell to Cal Poly 10-7 this morning at West Valley College in Saratoga. The Broncos' season record falls to 9-14.

Santa Clara freshman Whit Gilfillan's goal gave the Broncos the early lead, but the Mustang's quickly countered with a power play equalizer. Gee put the Broncos up 2-1 later in the period with a fast break down the far side for the team's only other lead in the game.

The Broncos notched two steals in the same period, but couldn't convert, as Cal Poly tied the game with an 8-meter goal and then took a 3-2 lead with one minute left in the period.

The teams traded goals in the second frame, including a second score by Gee. With the Broncos in a six-on-five situation, head coach Keith Wilbur called a time out and set up a play for Gee that was executed well.

Sophomore Mark Perlite tied the score at four on the first play of the second half, but Cal Poly pulled away with four consecutive goals, including two on man-up situations. Jon Greco closed the gap by one with a goal late in the third quarter.

Down 8-5, Cal Poly scored twice to move up 10-5. Late scores by Gee and junior J.P. Doucette rounded out the Bronco scoring.

Peter Moore registered eight saves in goal for Santa Clara.

The Broncos will return to the pool tomorrow in Berkeley, taking on Cal Maritime at 9 a.m. and California at 1 p.m.
