SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's water polo team defeated Bronco graduates 19-10 in the team's annual alumni game, held this morning at the Leavey Pool
Freshman Jon Greco led the Broncos with four goals, while Whit Gilfillan, J.P. Doucette and Mark Oda added three each. Logan Gee and Mark Perlite posted two scores each and Matt Sanchez and Marc Hausle added one goal apiece.
For the alumni, Dan O'Connell led with four goals, while Jay Moorhead added two. Jeff Raegan, Andy Sikic, Kyle Parrish and Kevin Spring added one score apiece.
Also participating for the alumni was Tex Peacock, Bryan Failing, Brian Sprouse and Brian Stoelker.
The undergrads took a 4-2 lead after the first quarter, with O'Connell scoring twice to keep the alumni alive. Santa Clara took a 5-2 lead when Doucette's shot was tipped by Sikic into the goal. Gilfillan made it an 8-2 game when a ball took a favorable bounce off his shoulder and into the back of the cage, but Sikic countered with a skip shot to reduce the lead to five.
Down 9-4 at the half, the alumni scored twice to get back in the game, but a behind-the-back goal by Gilfillan pushed the Broncos ahead, with Gee's third-quarter goal doubling the advantage to 14-7.
In the fourth quarter, Moorhead scored on a penalty shot for the alumni's final tally, while Hausle scored with six seconds remaining into an empty net.
The Broncos, 10-23 overall, return to the pool tomorrow, visiting UC Davis for a noon contest.
