Men's Water Polo Falls Twice in Final Hawaii Contests

Nov. 4, 2002

HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Santa Clara University men's water polo team lost to 17th-ranked Cal Baptist 12-8 to close out a string of six matches in three days of action in Hawaii. The Broncos opened today's action with a 10-5 defeat to Chaminade. The Broncos are now 10-22 overall.

"All the teams out here were very competitive," head coach Keith Wilbur said. "I'm proud of the way we kept our heads up and played hard, despite not coming home with a W. It was good competition for us and we played better every time out. It was great to see us improve as a team.

Against Chaminade, freshman Marc Hausle led the way with two goals, while juniors J.P. Doucette and Logan Gee scored one each. Sophomore Mark Oda added the final tally. Sophomore netminder Peter Moore led the Bronco defense with 11 blocks and two steals.

Against Cal Baptist, freshman Whit Gilfillan scored three times while fellow newcomer Austin Brizgys posted two goals. Freshman John Greco, and sophomores Mark Perlite and Matt Sanchez added one score apiece. Moore had 10 saves to close out the weekend.

The Broncos return to the Bay Area for a contest on Friday, against fourth-ranked USC. That match will be played at San Jose State University and is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. The Broncos will then host an alumni game at the Leavey Pool on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 11 a.m.
