SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Finishing his final year, redshirt senior and team captain Jimmy Moore (JM) recaps his time at Santa Clara University and shares his goals for the rest of the season. The Broncos came out last weekend with a big win against No. 12 Loyola Marymount University (LMU) where Moore contributed a goal in the 10-6 win. The Broncos are 2-1 in conference play with two more conference games before the WWPA championship. Moore will be honored for the Bronco's Senor Day on Nov. 9 at 1:00 against Air Force.
JA: What led to your decision to attend Santa Clara University?
JM: Santa Clara University has always been a part of my life. My three older siblings, parents, and many other members of my extended family all attended SCU and have contributed to my desire to come here.
JA: What is your most memorable moment as a Bronco?
JM: I have had so many great memories with my friends and classmates over the past few years. In the pool, I think my most memorable moment came this past weekend when we defeated LMU at their pool. It was the first time that anyone on the current team has beaten them. We played a great team game and fought hard through all four quarters. Out of the pool, I enjoyed living with my best friends off-campus. We had a great group of guys and always had fun together.
JA: How old were you when you started playing water polo? What influenced you to start playing the sport?
JM: I started playing water polo when I was about 10 or 11. My older brothers started playing the sport as off-season training for baseball, and they fell in love with it. After seeing them do well, I decided to give it a try and had a great time.
JA: Has this season gone as you expected? What are your goals for finishing out your last season?
JM: For the most part, this season has gone pretty well. There are always going to be ups and downs when playing a competitive NCAA sport, but I think our team does a great job fighting through adversity. Our main goal this season is to win our WWPA conference tournament for the first time ever and advance to the NCAA tournament in December. This year, we have a great team and an amazing chance to accomplish this goal, especially after improving our chances with a win this past weekend against rival LMU at their pool.
JA: What is your favorite part about being part of the water polo team?
JM: My absolute favorite part about being on the water polo team is the group of guys and the bond we share. Everybody on the team is so friendly and genuine. I know that if I ever have an issue or problem, I have a team full of great friends who would be willing to help. The entire program--past and present--is an amazing family to be involved with. The alumni are always contributing to the program and supporting the current team.
JA: Who is your role model? What about this person most inspires you?
JM: My two older brothers and my older sister are my main role models. I've always looked up to them to show me the right way to go about any aspect of life. Seeing them enjoy their SCU careers made it so easy to know that this was the right school for me. I'm pretty sure my oldest brother, Peter, still holds a few of the goalie records for the water polo team. My second brother, Charlie, also had a great career for the SCUMP team. And my sister, Katie, was frequently involved with the program and now lives nearby in San Francisco, so I try to visit her when I get the chance.
JA: What advice would you give to an incoming student-athlete?
JM: Constant hard work goes a long way. As an incoming freshman, I was a far cry from ready to play or contribute to the team. Four years of hard work later, I am a captain of one of the best teams I have ever played with. If you constantly work to improve yourself, you will eventually see results in the long run.
JA: As an economics major, what is your plan after this season?
JM: As of right now, I'm focusing on finishing out this season in the best way possible. After I graduate in December, I would like to live in San Francisco or elsewhere in the Bay Area, and find a job to put my Bronco education to work.
