NIPOMO, Calif. – Santa Clara University out-played the field Tuesday at the Firestone Grill Invitational in Nipomo, shooting a tournament-best round of 300 to place second overall in the nine-team event hosted by Cal Poly.

All four of Santa Clara's qualifying scores Tuesday were in the 70's, with senior Miki Ueoka (pictured) posting an even-par 72 in final round play to place second in the 47-player field. Ueoka was one of three Bronco golfers to finish inside the top 10; Tamara Surtees (tied for sixth) and Lauren Oh (tied for ninth).

Strong winds contributed to high scores during the first 36 holes Monday at the Monarch Dunes Golf Club on California's central coast. First-round leaders, Cal State Northridge, were able to hold-off Santa Clara and claim the team championship title. For compete tournament results CLICK HERE.

"Today's round was a huge momentum builder for us," said Santa Clara head coach Polly Schulze. "An eye-opener for this group, allowing us to see what is possible when we play well and put up a solid number."

The event was the second of the season for Santa Clara, who had three golfers among the leaders at the Circling Raven Invitational in mid-September.

Up next for the Broncos is their 2010-11 home event, the Santa Clara Colby Invitational, held at Silver Creek Valley Country Club in San Jose, Monday and Tuesday, October 25-26.

"We feel really, really good going into our home event," added Schulze. "We've established some year-long goals, trying to build and sustain improvement throughout each tournament. We did that today and are looking forward to keeping that going."
