SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Senior Miki Ueoka out played the entire field with a final round 69 to help Santa Clara University's women's golf team finish ahead of seven schools at the Juli Inkster Invitational at San Jose's Almaden Golf and Country Club.
Ueoka had seven birdies through the 36-hole event and finished 4-over par, tying for fourth on the tournament leaderboard. Classmate Lauren Oh led the field with 38 pars and finished in a tie for 22nd. As a team Santa Clara was sixth among a strong field of 12 schools, placing just behind the five teams who entered the event ranked among the nation's top 31.
"Miki played amazing, I am so happy for her, she has been working so hard," said first year head coach Krystal Kelly. "Every time I looked up she was throwing darts. This being her senior year, she wants to go out on a high note and was really focused."
Santa Clara's low scoring during the first two rounds Monday, paired the team's individuals against the players from No. 22 UC Davis and UC Irvine, something Kelly believes is a sign that the program is headed in the right direction.
The team will have the day off Wednesday to focus on their schoolwork, resuming practice Thursday in preparation for the Fresno State Classic, Monday and Tuesday, March 7-8.
