Busy Schedule Has SCU at Almaden CC on Monday and Tuesday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara University women's golf team will playing in San Jose State's 2011 Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational, Monday and Tuesday, February 28 and March 1 at Almaden Golf and Country Club in San Jose.

Last week the Broncos battled rain and wind at Stanford's Peg Barnard Invitational. Next week the team will be playing in Fresno State's Invitational. Bronco senior Miki Ueoka – who won the Fresno event as a sophomore in 2009 – is coming off a tie for eighth among a 70-player field in Palo Alto.

"Right now we are in the middle of a three-week stretch where we have tournaments every Monday and Tuesday," said Ueoka, a past NCAA Championship qualifier. "It's also been really busy because it is the end of the quarter. But I think our practices leading up to Stanford's tournament were really efficient and productive. We've made a lot of really good strides coming off winter break."

The Broncos are under the direction of new head coach Krystal Kelly, who was promoted to the position last month. Her practices and tournament prep have been well received by the SCU student-athletes thus far.

"I've really enjoyed my first few weeks," said Kelly. "My first tournament was just that. It was a little nerve racking for everyone since it was our first event. It's different as a coach versus (being) a player. There are so many little details that as a player you don't acknowledge. Hopefully mother nature will be a little friendlier to us as well."

Despite the rain at Stanford last week, Ueoka was in the top 10 and Santa Clara out-played Pac-10 Conference member Washington State and Fresno State, next week's tournament hosts.

Kelly aims to have SCU post a 314 or better in all three rounds at Almaden and finish in the top 5. The tournament's 12-team field has five schools ranked among the national top 31, including No. 9 California, No. 22 UC Davis, No. 24 Colorado, No. 30 Washington and No. 31 Oregon.
