Women's Water Polo Looks to Sweep Two Home Games

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The women's water polo team will host No. 11 Indiana and Bay Area rival Cal State East Bay at the Sullivan Aquatic Center on Feb. 21. The Broncos are riding a a two game winning streak with a 5-4 record after picking up two wins last weekend. 

Up first at 9:30 am, the Broncos will face the Indiana Hoosiers. The Hoosiers are 4-5 on the season, getting off to a rough start against all top-20 teams, but are currently on a four game winning streak, including a big overtime win against No. 9 Princeton at Princeton. 

Leading the pack for the Hoosiers are two Southern California natives, junior Candyce Schroeder and senior Colleen McNaught. Schroeder has scored 16 goals this season and McNaught has tallied 14 assists. In the net is junior Mary Campbell who has recorded 81 saves. 

At 4:30 pm, the Broncos will take on the Cal State East Bay Pioneers. The Pioneers hold a 3-6 record, and are on a two-game winning streak.  The Broncos and the Pioneers matched up last season at the Sullivan Aquatic Center for the Broncos Senior Day game.  Elle Surber tallied four goals and Julia Peters three, giving the Broncos the 12-10 win.

Three Pioneers lead the offensive efforts; Junior Taylor Cross has recorded 11 and junior Sabrina and senior Alyssa Hess each have 10 goals scored. However, junior Casey Rushforth posts 19 steals and sophomore Olivia Mackell has 21 earned ejections, giving the Pioneers plenty of scoring opportunities. 

For the Broncos, senior Julia Peters and junior Elle Surber lead the team, each with 15 goals scored. Surber has also tallied 13 assists, 18 steals and eight earned ejections.

In addition to these two games, both of Santa Clara's opponents will play each other at 12 pm. The complete schedule also includes a 3 pm game with Indiana facing off against Cal State Monterey Bay.
