Women's Water Polo Picks Up First Conference Win in Final Quarter

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The women's water polo team picked up their first conference win of the season, defeating Fresno Pacific 9-7. The Broncos are now 13-10 and 1-1 in conference play.

The Sunbirds put in the first goal of the game, but Erin Sheridan followed up with a goal to tie the game 1-1. Off an earned ejection, the Sunbirds put in a second goal to take the 2-1 lead. The Broncos earned their own ejection and Julia Peters found the back of the net to keep the game tied 2-2. Cathy Cantoni put in a goal, giving the Broncos their first lead of the game 3-2. The Sunbirds were able to put in a final goal to keep the game tied 3-3 at the end of the first quarter.

The Sunbirds regained the lead to start the second quarter, 4-3. Both the Broncos and the Sunbirds earned ejections, but neither was able to convert their man-up opportunities. The Sunbirds' defense stepped up, keeping the Broncos scoreless in the second quarter and gaining a 5-3 lead going into half.

Elizabeth Anderson came out on fire in the third quarter, scoring all two of the Broncos' goals and bringing them within one going into the fourth quarter: 6-5 Sunbirds.

Anderson put in her third goal of the game to start the fourth quarter, tying the game 6-6. Peters put in her second goal of the game to take the 7-6 lead, but the Sunbirds kept it close, tying the game on final time at seven all. With a goal by Ashleigh Bandimere and a fourth and final goal by Anderson, the Broncos picked up their first conference win over the Sunbirds.

The Broncos will continue their conference play, traveling down to Southern California to play Cal Baptist on April 10 and San Diego State on April 11.
