Sydni Estrella Named GCC Co-Player of the Week

Golden Coast Conference Weekly Update

SANTA CLARA, Calif- Picking up two home wins over the weekend, including one over No. 11 Indiana, the Bronco women's water polo team broke into the top-20 for the first time this season, coming in at No. 20. And there was more good news on Thursday.  After boosting the Broncos defense in both games, junior goalie Sydni Estrella has been named Golden Coast Conference Co-Player of the Week (Feb. 26).

"Sydni play outstanding in the cage this past weekend in both of our games," said Bronco head coach Keith Wilbur. "In our win against No. 11 Indiana, it was a low scoring game, and defense was key.  Sydni had several huge blocks in that game, and I am very glad that our conference is recognizing her performance by naming her Player of the Week."

Estrella's performance proved to be key in both wins, including the upset win over then-No. 11 Indiana. Against the Hoosiers, Estrella recorded 12 saves and eight saves in the win over Cal State East Bay. Estrella shares the honors with Loyola Marymount senior Laura Lopez who led the Lions offensive efforts in their own upset win over No. 10 UC Irvine.

This is Estrella's first season starting full time in the cage for the Bronocs. Estrella has started all 11 games and tallied 93 blocks, 12 steals and two assists.

Estrella is the second Broncos to receive Player of the Week honors this season, following fellow junior Elizabeth Anderson who received this honor the week of Feb. 5.

The Broncos are set to play No. 2 Stanford on Feb. 26 at 3:30 pm. The game will be broadcast on the Pac-12 network. The team will then travel down to Thousand Oaks, Calif. for the Cal Lutheran Invitational.
