2010 Bronco Invite Women's Results (Open, then Invite Results)
In the largest and strongest field ever on Saturday for the Bronco Invitational, Santa Clara finished ninth in the men's Invite Open (8K) and the women eighth in the women's Invite Open (5K). Santa Clara will run in two weeks at the WCC Championship in Crystal Springs, Calif.
"It was a really good day for the Broncos led by All-American Stephanie Wilson in her first race of 2010, taking seventh. Stephanie admits to being a little rusty but is in a good place with four weeks to go before the NCAA Regional Meet," said Bronco head coach Tom Service. "We also had an awesome performance by Freshman Erin Hicks, running 17:36 and breaking the SCU Freshman record at Baylands by 14 seconds. Fellow freshmen Allie Sibole continued her outstanding season as the Broncos third runner. Mary Reynolds and Carey Parker rounded out the scoring. Melissa Conlin led the Broncos in the Open Race in 19:10. Although the Broncos finished in 8th, we are so close to putting it together for the Championship part of the season. We are very encouraged by the results.
"I was really pleased with how the men ran today," said Bronco associate head coach Felipe Montoro. "Everyone did a great job of sticking to our race plan despite the fast early pace of the field. We moved very well over the second half of the race. Kevin Oliver ran an outstanding race running a big pr of 24:40, Ben Demaree keeps getting better and re-set his own freshman record for 8k at SCU running 24:44. Overall we ran a team time record of 25:05 average and we were without Robbie Reid (who ran 24:27 unatt) and Chris Sampson, both of whom are redshirting. We are really looking forward to competing at the WCC Championships in two weeks."
In maybe the most competitive field ever, the Santa Clara women finished 8th overall in the Bronco Invite Invitational, scoring 227 points. All-American Stephanie Wilson, in her opening race of the season after suffering through injuries, was seventh overall, finishing in 17:22.2. Two freshmen were second and third for the Broncos: Erin Hicks was 18th at 17:36.1 and Allie Sibole was third at 18:04.3. Sophomore Carey Parker finished 83rd at 18:34.3 and junior Nicole Giove rounded out the top five in 92nd place at 18:40.1.
Lauren Lodge, a junior from Pepperdine, won the Bronco Invite Invitational with a time of 16:50.4. Long Beach State won its third-straight Bronco Open Invite, scoring 60 points.
The men finished ninth in the Bronco Invite Open, scoring 257 points. Kevin Oliver led the Bronco charge by finishing 28th at 24:41.6. Ben Demaree was the second finisher for SCU, crossing in 24:44.4 in 34th place. Rounding out the scoring was Austin Jones in 48th place at 25:00.8, Marcos Hinojosa in 66th place at 25:13.4 and Evan Hennessey in 81st place at 25:44.4.
Jon Peterson of UC Davis won the Bronco Invite Open, crossing in 23:45.1. Lamar won the Open with 51 points.
The women finished tied for fourth in the Bronco Invite Open, scoring 127 points. Melissa Conlin was the first Bronco runner to finish, crossing at 19:10.3 in 15th place. Kayla Germany was 21st at 19:19.5; Jamie Anderson was 26th at 19:28.4; Megan Murnane was 29th at 19:32.3 and Julia Restin was 36th at 19:36.9.
The Bronco Women's Open was won by unattached runner Derego Jenn at 18:22. Eicholtz Anna of Chico State was the first collegiate runner across in third place at 18:28.7. Chico State won the Open with 19 points.
JK Withers won the Bronco Invite Open with a time of 25:18.6. The first collegiate was Zadronzna Zachary of Chico State, crossing at 25:33.4. San Francisco won the race with 48 points.
Two former Broncos won the Fun Run. Whitney Porter won the women's 5K in 21:32.9. John Laughlin, who is in his first year of law school at Washington University, won the men's 5K, crossing the line at 16:39.9. Two other former Broncos, Alex Harkins and Mike Delanrenti, were second (17:00.2) and third (19:36.7), respectively.
