Rea Named to Clemens Award Watch List

Feb. 11, 2005

HOUSTON, Texas - Senior right-handed pitcher Anthony Rea was named to the Roger Clemens Award Watch List today along with 41 other pitchers from around the country. The award, which is in its second season of existence, is awarded to the nation's top collegiate pitcher.

Prior to the start of the 2005 season, Rea was named to the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List. The Palo Alto, Calif. native also earned multiple preseason All-America honors as Louisville Slugger and the NCBWA both recognized the right-hander.

Rea is one of two players representing the West Coast Conference on the Roger Clemens Watch List as Loyola Marymount's Stephen Kahn also appears on the list. Of the 42 players on the list, eight come from schools in California.

The list is comprised of all Division I pitchers who were named as pre-season All-Americans by either Baseball America or Collegiate Baseball, in addition to those pitchers who have been honored so far this season as National Pitchers of the Week by the National College Baseball Writers Association. Weekly winners of the writer's award will be added to the list until the start of the first round of voting at the end of April. Additional nominees will be added to the ballot based on notable performances and rankings in the NCAA statistical rankings.

Rea has made three appearances in six games so far in the 2005 campaign. The reliever has already picked up a win and struck out five batters in only four innings of action.

A year ago, Rea set the Santa Clara record with 13 saves last season. A two-time All-Academic WCC selection, Rea ranked fourth in the country and paced the conference in saves. He also was tops on the team with a 1.68 ERA in 2004. He put together a 5-1 record on the mound, while striking out 53 batters in 53.2 innings of work.
