SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - John Bryant had 15 points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots as Santa Clara beat Portland 52-50 on Monday night.
Brody Angley added 14 points for the Broncos (12-10, 4-3 West Coast Conference), who came back to win after a double overtime loss to Gonzaga on Saturday. Mitch Henke added 11 points.
Nik Raivio scored 23 points for the Pilots (7-16, 1-6), who lost their third straight and sixth in seven overall.
Jared Stohl matched his season-high with 13 points and Robin Smeulders had a season-high 16 rebounds.
Smeulders and Jasonn Hannibal got their first career starts for Portland, replacing Kramer Knutson and Taishi Ito, both of whom started on the bench for the first time this year.
Angley made three free throws midway through the second half to reach 1,000 points for his career. He became the 26th player in school history to achieve the milestone. Bryant moved into second place on Santa Clara's all-time block list with 134.
Angley's 3-pointer with 13:24 remaining to play gave the Broncos the lead for good as it sparked a 10-0 run. After missing 12 of its first 15 shots, Santa Clara put together its short run.
Portland missed 19 of its first 22 shots of the second half and went scoreless over a nine-minute span in which the Broncos eased ahead.
The Pilots made it hard, scoring 20 points in the final five minutes to creep within the final margin.
Andrew Zimmerman sank a pair of free throws with less than three seconds remaining to give the Broncos a 24-23 lead at halftime.
Santa Clara next hosts local rival, No. 24 Saint Mary's, on Monday, Feb. 11 at 8 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN2 and can be heard live on 1220 KNTS and SantaClaraBroncos.com.
