Former Bronco Basketball Stars Bud and Ralph Ogden to be Inducted Into San Jose Sports Hall of Fame

Aug. 31, 2007

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Former Santa Clara University men's basketball standouts Bud and Ralph Ogden will be inducted into the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame for their contributions to sports in San Jose this November. The brothers from San Jose helped Bronco basketball reach new heights in the late 1960s and early 1970s, setting program records and elevating the team to a No. 3 national ranking in 1969.

Individually, the former Bronco standouts have their names permanently etched in Santa Clara's all-time record books. Bud holds the Broncos single-game scoring record of 55 points and is ranked 10th on the all-time scoring list at 1,437, followed by younger brother Ralph, who is ranked at No. 16 with 1,280. Bud averaged 18.2 points per game in his career, third all-time and Ralph put up 15.8 per game, good for seventh all-time at SCU. As a senior in 1969-70, Ralph averaged 21.9 points per game, placing him third all-time for a single season on the Mission Campus. In their two years together at Santa Clara from 1967-69, the Broncos posted a 49-6 record and made two appearances in the NCAA Tournament Regional Final. In the 1968-69, the Broncos were ranked as high as third in the national polls, and participated in the NCAA tournament before being defeated by the eventual national champion UCLA. Professionally the brothers saw action in the NBA also. Bud played for the Philadelphia 76ers, and Ralph played a season for the Golden State Warriors.

Bud had his jersey raised to the Leavey Center rafters, alongside teammate Dennis Awtrey in a halftime ceremony on Feb. 5, 2007.

The brothers are not the only former Broncos to be inducted into the Hall of Fame recently. In 2006 former Bronco football player and coach Bill McPherson was inducted. McPherson is best known for being the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator and helping them win five Super Bowls. A year before, in 2005, Brent Jones, a former Bronco football player, who had an illustrious career at tight-end with the San Francisco 49ers, was also inducted.

This year's induction ceremony is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 14 and is presented by the San Jose Sports Authority, a sports marketing agency for the City of San Jose that supports youth and amateur athletics locally, along with bringing premier sports events to the city. Dinner tickets begin at $200 each and may be reserved by calling (408) 288-2936. Sponsorship packages range from $2,500 to $15,000.

The 2007 Class brings to 63 the number of South Bay sports figures in the Hall of Fame, which recognizes each honoree with a bronze plaque mounted in the concourse of HP Pavilion. The annual dinner is an event of the San Jose Sports Authority, San Jose Arena Authority, HP Pavilion Management/San Jose Sharks and the City of San José. The event benefits Special Olympics Silicon Valley Region and high school sports programs.
