Santa Clara defeats Alumni 12-9

Sept. 17, 2005

Santa Clara, Calif. - In the annual Santa Clara men's waterpolo alumni match, the 2005 squad came away with a hard-earned 12-9 triumph over the alumni team. Redshirt junior Whit Gilfillan and freshman Jack Wall paced the Broncos with two goals each Saturday afternoon. Alums Jay Moorhead, Daniel Figoni, and Paul Navabpour led the alumni attack with two goals apiece.

"It was a good showing by the alumni. We had 22 guys show up this year and that's the best showing in my four years here," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "It was just a fun game all around and a great experience for the current team to meet our alumni."

In the first half, recent graduate Peter Moore kept the current team scoreless as the alumni team took 1-0 lead heading into the second period. Both squads were evenly matched throughout the afternoon, as no one was able to build more than a one goal lead for most of the match. However, in the fourth period, the 2005 squad managed to knock in five goals to distance themselves and take the victory away from the alumni.

Aside from Gilfillan and Wall, Grant Allison, Austin Brizgys, William Gorin, Dylan Knee, Matthew Martin, Mark Melnyk, Charlie Moore, and Luke Oda all contributed one goal each. Redshirt junior Mike Petersen played well in the cage for the Broncos, posting six blocks in two quarters of action.

Santa Clara returns to action next Friday when they host Cal Lutheran at the Leavey Center Pool. Game time is at 4 p.m. The Broncos will also be participating in the Slugfest Classic, hosted by UC Santa Cruz, September 24 and 25.
