Santa Clara, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's water polo team will look to open its conference season with a splash this weekend, as the Broncos (3-3) are scheduled to play five Western Water Polo Association opponents. Trying to squeeze in five matches in three days is no easy task, and head coach Keith Wilbur understands the importance of having a good showing this weekend.
"We have five games this weekend, and every game is a conference game and also good competition," said Wilbur. "All of these games will factor into whether or not we qualify for conference championships, and if we qualify, then what our seed will be. Needless to say, this is a big weekend for us, and we are looking forward to it."
First up for SCU will be its conference opener against Cal Lutheran (3-4), who visits the Leavey Center pool at 4 p.m. on Friday, September 23. The following day, the Broncos will travel to Santa Cruz to take part in the Slugfest Classic, hosted by UC Santa Cruz. Santa Clara will play two matches on Saturday, September 24, once in the morning against Whittier College (3-5) and the other against UC San Diego (11-2) in the afternoon. SCU finishes off the weekend with two afternoon matches against Air Force Academy (2-1) and Pomona-Pitzer (4-5).
