Berkeley, Calif. - Just days after upsetting No. 10 Pacific and No. 19 UC Santa Cruz, the Santa Clara men's water polo team came up short of upsetting another ranked squad this afternoon, falling to No. 3 California 17-6 at the Spieker Aquatics Complex. Leading the way for the Broncos were junior Whit Gilfillan and sophomore Matthew Martin, as each scored two goals each.

"Cal is one of the top teams in the country, so it was a learning experience for our team," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "We had a couple of good wins this week against some good competition, but playing a team like Cal, we realize we still have some work to do before the end of the season."

Other players who scored for Santa Clara included freshman Jack Wall and junior Patrick Noack, as each contributed a goal in the losing cause. Sophomore Chris Parolin and freshman Mike Detoy each drew two kickouts each. The trio of Robert Callahan, Mike Petersen, and Jon Young shared time in the cage, combining for eight blocks and two steals.

Santa Clara Santa Clara (8-6, 7-4 WWPA) returns to action on Friday, October 7, participating in the Convergence Tournament in Claremont, Calif.
