SAN MATEO, Calif. — Santa Clara women's basketball freshman guard Tess Heal splashed onto the college basketball scene in the season's opening week last week, and for that she's earned the West Coast Conference's Freshman of the Week award for the week of Nov. 7-13.
Heal impressed in her first official week of collegiate basketball, averaging 22.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.0 steals per game while shooting 50.0% from the floor and 72.2% from the free-throw line in two contests. Heal was the highest scorer in the WCC on Monday's season-opening night and tied for the 11th-highest scorer in the nation that day with 28 points on only 14 field goal attempts against UC Santa Barbara. She added six rebounds, two assists and a steal to her dazzling debut effort against the Gauchos – the preseason No. 2 pick in the Big West Conference.
She followed that up on Friday by scoring 10 of the Broncos' 11 points in overtime and 10 of her own 16 in the game as she led Santa Clara to a 76-72 overtime win over Cal State Fullerton. It was Heal who found an open Ayzhiana Basallo for an assist on the game-tying basket before the end of regulation, and it was Heal who – with the Broncos trailing by one in overtime with less than 30 seconds to play – stole the ball, went the length of the floor and made a layup, drew the foul and made her free throw to put Santa Clara up for good at 73-71.
