SAN MATEO, Calif. — Santa Clara University women's basketball freshman phenom Tess Heal earned her fourth consecutive West Coast Conference Freshman of the Week award Monday – her fifth in the last six weeks and 10th on the year – after putting up back-to-back 20-point performances on the road during the week of Feb. 6-12.
She scored a season-high 29 points at Pacific on Thursday, making 11 baskets while shooting 55.0% from the floor. She also had four assists, two rebounds and two steals in that game. She followed that up with a team-high 20 points and almost had a double-double with eight rebounds on Saturday at Saint Mary's.
For the week, she averaged 24.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. She shot 47.2% from the field, 40.0% from 3-point range, and 86.7% from the free-throw line.
Heal has been one of the most prolific scoring freshmen in the country this season. Her 455 total points are second-most by a freshman and rank tied for 31st overall through Sunday, and her 16.9 points per game are tied for fourth-best among NCAA Division I freshmen. No freshman in any of the West Region's Division I conferences (WCC, Pac-12, Mountain West, Big West, Big Sky, WAC) is scoring higher than her. Heal's 4.0 assists per game are tied for seventh in the country among freshmen.
She is only 45 points away from reaching the Santa Clara single-season top-10 list. She needs 22 more assists to reach the No. 10 spot on the Broncos' single-season assists list. Heal has won every WCC Freshman of the Week award since Jan. 23. She's won 10 of the 14 awards handed out this season. Santa Clara has collected 11 of the 14 awards and six in a row, with Marya Hudgins winning the honor on Jan. 16.
