Women's Basketball Dominates Rival San Jose State in Final Non-Conference Game

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Tune-up… done.

The Santa Clara University women's basketball team closed out non-conference play Tuesday with its fourth win in a row and fourth consecutive over its South Bay rival, as it downed San Jose State by more than 30, 81-49, at Leavey Center.

The Broncos (9-4) turned in their fifth-largest win in the last 35 years over their rival Spartans (1-8), beating them by 32 in what was their final non-conference game before opening West Coast Conference play on Saturday. The Broncos have beaten the Spartans in four straight meetings now dating to the 2018-19 season. Santa Clara shot 56.6% from the floor while limiting SJSU to 34.0%, outrebounded the Spartans 38-23, and made more free throws (16) than the Spartans attempted (15) in the route.

Tess Heal turned in her second consecutive 20-point game with a game-high 21. She also had five assists, two rebounds and a steal in the effort. Lara Edmanson tallied her fourth double-double of the year with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Lexie Pritchard tied her career high with 18 points, and Marya Hudgins added 14 points, five rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal off the bench. Ashlee Maldonado turned in an all-around performance with seven points, six assists and a career-high six rebounds.

The Spartans were led by 10 points each from Marisa Davis-Jones, Amhyia Moreland and Sabrina Ma. Santa Clara scored 23 points off of 18 San Jose State turnovers and also had 15 points off nine offensive rebounds.

The Broncos closed the game on a 13-0 run over the final 4 1/2 minutes, and a 17-3 run over the last 6:25. They made seven of their last eight shots while SJSU missed each of its last seven and closed the game going 1 for 9. Santa Clara outscored San Jose State, 41-22, in the second half and outshot them, 53.6% to 32.0%. They outrebounded the Spartans in the final two quarters alone, 22-9.

Santa Clara begins WCC competition at home on Saturday when it hosts Pepperdine. LMU visits on Monday as part of the first weekend of WCC play. Fans can purchase tickets and find all live coverage links on SantaClaraBroncos.com.
