Heal Earns Fourth WCC Freshman of the Week Award

SAN MATEO, Calif. — Santa Clara University women's basketball freshman guard Tess Heal was named the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Week award Monday for the fourth time in five weeks after helping lead the Broncos to a double-digit road win Sunday at Nevada.

Heal bounced back in a big way Sunday, scoring a game-high 26 points on the road at Nevada to lead Santa Clara (8-4) to its third consecutive win. Heal was coming off a week in which she averaged just 7.0 points per game in three contests. And with the Broncos traveling with a limited roster and playing at altitude in Reno, she stepped up with her third 20-point performance of the year by shooting 57.9% with 11 made baskets and two 3-pointers. She also had five rebounds, dished three assists and recorded a block.

Last week was the first time this season Heal did not win the WCC Freshman of the Week award. She previously earned the award on Nov. 14, Nov. 21 and Nov. 28 in each of the first three weeks of the season. Pacific's Sydney Ward earned the nod in week four.

Heal and the Broncos wrap up non-conference play at home on Tuesday versus South Bay rival San Jose State. They open up WCC play at home on Saturday versus Pepperdine, then host LMU on Dec. 19 before breaking for the holiday.
