USBWA Release
Full WCC Release
SAN MATEO, Calif. — Another strong string of performances last week and more accolades on Tuesday for Santa Clara University women's basketball freshman guard Tess Heal, as she was named both the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Tamika Catchings National Freshman of the Week, and earned her fifth West Coast Conference Freshman of the Week award Tuesday for the week of Dec. 12-19. She has won all but one WCC award so far this year.
Heal averaged 17.3 points, 4.7 assists, and 3.7 rebounds in three games from Dec. 12 through Monday (the USBWA award was based on Heal's two games from Dec. 12 to Sunday) while shooting 55.6% to help lead Santa Clara to a 2-1 week and a 1-1 start in WCC play. Heal was the Broncos' leading scorer in all three games during the week and was the game-high scorer twice.
She turned in her fourth 20-point performance of the year on Tuesday against South Bay rival San Jose State, closing out non-conference play with a game-high 21 points to go with five assists, two rebounds and a steal. She scored 16 points, dished five assists and collected three rebounds on Saturday versus Pepperdine. She twice hit game-tying layups in the fourth quarter versus the Waves.

Heal has continued to perform as one of the best freshmen not only in the WCC, not only on the West Coast, but in the nation. Through Monday's games, she's the top scoring freshman in all six West Region conferences (WCC, Pac-12, Mountain West, Big West, WAC, Big Sky) and the No. 5 freshman in the country at 15.9 points per game. She is also eighth among the nation's freshmen with 4.0 assists per game.
Heal and the Broncos break for the holiday before resuming WCC play at home on Dec. 31 versus rival San Francisco. Fans can purchase tickets and find all live coverage links on SantaClaraBroncos.com.
