Beach Volleyball Hosts San Francisco for Senior Day on Wednesday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara beach volleyball is set for its lone home competition of the 2021 season on Wednesday. The Broncos host San Francisco for a West Coast Conference matchup starting at 4 p.m. PT.

Wednesday marks Senior Day for Gretchen Reinert and Kathryn Decker

Unfortunately, due to a recent spike in COVID-19 cases within the campus community, we are still not able to allow fans/spectators on campus for home events at this time. The priority continues to be the health and safety of Santa Clara student-athletes, coaches and staff. The university will continue to evaluate campus policies. While the state of California announced guidance for outdoor seated venues on April 1, the university reserves the right to be more cautious than public health guidance.

THE MATCHUP

The Broncos (2-2, 2-2 WCC) picked up two victories in two days to open the campaign at the WCC Midseason Invitational last week. They defeated Pacific 4-1 on Thursday before falling to Saint Mary's 4-1 later that day. On Friday, the team lost 5-0 to No. 5 LMU before wrapping the event with a 5-0 victory over the Dons.

Santa Clara scored both its first season-opening victory and first sweep victory over a Division I opponent since 2016 at the event in Santa Cruz. There were seven different Broncos that posted two match wins, including victories on court one by Decker/Claire Doud on Thursday and Michelle Shaffer/Julia Sangiacomo on Friday.

The Dons (1-4, 1-4) lost to both the Lions and Broncos 5-0 around a 3-2 win over Pacific at the WCC Midseason Invitational. Anna Dalla Vecchia/Greta Corti lead the team with two match wins on court two.

SANTA CLARA SENIORS

Decker has competed in 34 matches over three years with 12 victories overall and seven victories on court one. In 2020, she teamed up with Shaffer to lead the Broncos with six wins, including four straight wins to start the season. Decker/Shaffer swept Pacific on March 4, 2020 to help Santa Clara to its first win on SCU campus grounds in program history. In 2018, Decker picked up a win on court two during Santa Clara's opening dual at the WCC Championship. She earned a WCC All-Academic honor last season.

Reinert is the only Bronco to compete in every one of the team's 49 duals since her freshman season in 2018. Reinert posted three sweep wins in two days at the 2018 WCC Midseason Invitational and posted a two-win day at the 2019 WCC/Big West Challenge. She has nine career victories overall and is a two-time WCC All-Academic selection.
