EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Santa Clara beach volleyball closed out its season on Friday with two defeats on day one of the West Coast Conference Championship. The fourth-seeded Broncos opened the day with a close 3-2 loss to fifth-seeded Pacific, then fell 5-0 in an elimination dual against third-seeded Saint Mary's at Dockweiler Beach.
The Broncos (5-7) jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Tigers (5-6) with two-set wins by Michelle Shaffer/Julia Sangiacomo on court two and Alexia Gallegos/Elena Radeff on court five. Pacific got on the board with a win at No. 3 by Jenny Todd/Jadyn Tubbs. Hanne De Schrijver/Alexa Edwards posted a three-set win at No. 1 for the Tigers to set up a winner-take-all finish at No. 4. Lucy Carpenter/Hania Taduran won the final frame of a three-setter on that court 15-13 to clinch the dual for Pacific.
The Gaels (11-10) won in two sets on all five courts in their third contest of the day.
Shaffer and Sangiacomo finish the season as Santa Clara's most successful pair. They won seven matches while playing exclusively at the top two positions. Friday marked the final competitions for Reinert and Decker as Broncos.
