Women's Soccer Opens Season at San Jose State Friday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – No. 19 Santa Clara women's soccer opens the 2018 campaign Friday at 6:30 p.m. at local rival San Jose State.

The Broncos got their first action of the year at the Red and White Scrimmage Saturday.

SERIES HISTORY
Santa Clara has won all 17 matches in its history with San Jose State with the first meeting coming in 1995. Last year the Broncos started the season with a 2-1 win over the Spartans at Stevens Stadium. The last meeting in San Jose was to open the 2011 season, with Santa Clara taking the match 2-1.

THE BRONCOS
Santa Clara (0-0) finished 2017 15-7-1 and 8-1 in the WCC en route to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The Broncos were 15th in the nation with 2.22 goals per game and led the WCC with 51 goals, 37 assists, and 139 points.

WCC Freshman of the Year Kelsey Turnbow was second in the league with 13 goals, five assists, and 31 points. Maddy Gonzalez was second on the team with 10 goals and added four assists while Maria Sanchez led the conference with six assists and added five goals.

Melissa Lowder appeared in 18 games in net with a 1.43 GAA and 69 saves for a .734 save percentage. Courtney Ogren played in six games.

THE SPARTANS
San Jose State (0-0) finished last year at 12-6-2 and 9-1-1 in the Mountain West, finishing first during the regular season but lost in penalty kicks in the opening round of the conference tournament. The Spartans outscored their opponents 28-22.

Jamilecxth Becerra led the team with seven goals in 2017 and finished second with 14 points. Darriell Franklin tied for second with five goals while Kristen Amarikwa's three assists is the most among returners.
