SANTA CLARA, Calif. – No. 7 Santa Clara women's soccer grinded out a 3-2 come-from-behind overtime victory over Portland Friday night at home to move into a tie for first place in the West Coast Conference.
The Broncos (13-2-1, 4-1 WCC) once again controlled the game, outshooting the Pilots (10-6, 3-2 WCC) 25-5 while putting 13 shots on frame and staying in the Portland half of the field for much of the second half.
With the score even at 2-all in the 92nd minute, Maria Sanchez was taken down in the box for the second time in under three minutes, leading to a penalty kick. Sanchez, who had missed a penalty kick in the 90th minute that would have been the game-winner, was injured on the play and Kelsey Turnbow stepped up to take the chance. She hit her shot low and to the left and into the back of the net.
Despite seeming to be outplaying the Pilots, Santa Clara found itself down 2-1 but drew even in the 72nd minute off the sixth goal in five games from Kelcie Hedge. A scramble in the box led to a shot from Machaela George that was blocked but went right to Hedge who banged it off the bottom of the cross bar and in.
The Broncos fell behind in the 53rd after a defender slipped, giving possession to Portland. Taryn Ries got the ball and passed to Larkin Russell outside the top of the box. Russell hit a perfect shot under the cross bar to make it 2-1.
A beautiful goal in the 24th minute by DB Pridham gave Santa Clara the 1-0 lead. Turnbow sent a ball into the box that Pridham touched and volleyed out of the air and under the cross bar.
A penalty kick by Ries in the 30th minute was the first of the night for Portland and tied the score at 1-1.

- Santa Clara is now 20-15-3 all-time against Portland and have won five in a row against the Pilots.
- The Broncos are now unbeaten in their last 19 overtime matches. During the stretch they are 11-0-8 with the last loss coming Aug. 24, 2014 vs. Cal 2-1.
- Santa Clara drew nine corner kicks on the night.
- Three Broncos attempted five shots each and three had three on goal.
